Outline of Annual Research Achievements

高空間分解能fMRI技術をもちいて、ヒト下側頭葉皮質後部領域における0.75ミリ程度の局所領域の平均的神経活動の物体カテゴリーレベルおよびサブテゴリーレベルでの選択性を調べた。
本年度は、引き続きヒト下側頭葉皮質（紡錘状回とそのまわりの大脳皮質）で高空間分解能のエコープラナーイメージング（EPI）撮像法を行うため必要の信号雑音比（SNR）を高める実験を行った。そのために、新しく開発したパラレルイメージング技術と専用の多チャンネル受信RFコイルを用いて、ファントムを健常なヒト被験者を対象に使って撮像パラメーターを調整し、実験を進めた。
次に、低空間分解能（面内解像度～３－４ミリ）のEPI撮像法と色々なカテゴリーの物体（ヒトの顔、街並、普通の物体、その他）刺激を用いて、個々の被験者の紡錘状回とそのまわりの大脳皮質について各カテゴリーに対する選択性を持つ物体関連領域（物体のカテゴリーによらず、物体を見るときに共通に賦活される外側後頭複合領域「lateral occipital complex = LOC野」、顔に対する選択的反応する紡錘状回顔領域「fusiform face area = FFA野」および街並に対する選択的反応する海馬傍回場所領域「parahippocampal place area = PPA野」）を同定した。
最後に、各被験者のFFA野に対して、低解像度（～3.5ミリ）と高解像度（～0.75ミリ）の実験を行い、それぞれの解像度で、顔刺激に対する選択性と他のカテゴリーの物体刺激に対する選択性を比較した。高い解像度の実験では、顔刺激に対して高い選択性を示す結果を確認することができた。現在は、これらの結果を定量化し、ヒト下側頭葉皮質後部領域における物体視コラム構造の構成について研究を進めている。
本年度は最終年度なので、いままで得たデータをまとめ、二本の論文の投稿を準備している。

Reason

高空間解像能fMRIを用いて、ヒト下側頭葉皮質物体選択性領域群の同定することに成功した。さらに、FFA野における顔刺激に対して高い選択性を確認した。これらの実験方法と結果は、今後ヒト下側頭葉皮質後部領域における物体視コラム構造の解明に大きく寄与するものである。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

複数の被験者で、FFA野における顔刺激に対して高い選択性の結果を再現する。これらの結果を基づいて、ヒトヒト下側頭葉皮質後部領域における物体視コラム構造の構成を定量的に調べる。現在、いままで得たデータをまとめ、二本の論文の投稿を準備している。
