Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The fucus of this project was on the study of the Ryukyuan Opera version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by the Otohimegekidan, the all-female troupe that emerged after World War II and disbanded in 2002. I have completed the English translatio of their 1960 version of script in order to understand tha nature of the locality oand universality of the Otohime production. I also accompnanied the Theatre Troupe Unai (which core members are ex-Otohime actors) to Hawaii for cross-obseravation. There I confirmed the "ritual," shamanistic side of their troupe, succeeded from Otohime Gekidan. For comparison, I also analyzed the production of MND by the post-Peter Brook directors in mainland Japan such as Noda Hideki. I also referred to the film production "Sankaku Yama no Majiru"(a.k.a. "Okinawan Midsummer Night's Dream") as well as the various version of MND performed by the Takarazuka Girls Revue.
