Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research elucidated properties of operators in Irish. There are some constructions that involve operator movement in Irish, such as the wh-construction, the cleft construction, and the construction with embedded topicalization. The research made it clear, (A) for the wh-construction, (i) that Irish has two types of [+Q] COMPs, and (ii) that adjunct wh-phrases in Irish are categorized into two groups: the manner class and the reason class, (B) for the cleft construction, (i) that CPs and APs can be clefted in Irish, unlike English or Japanese, and (ii) that while NP clefting allows six chain patterns with one embedded clause, clefting of the other categories only allows two chain patterns, and (C) for the construction with embedded topicalization, (i) that the head positions in charge of embedded topicalization are parameterized among languages, and (ii) that the ban against adjunction to adjuncts only disallows adjunction to adjuncts by way of internal merge.
