Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research project, we have elucidated the semantic mechanism underlying a certain number of rhetorical utterances around irony, from the point of view of the "Argumentative Polyphony Theory", a French linguistic theory. In our research subject are included not only such rhetorical figures as irony, litotes and euphemism, but also "banter" consisting in seemingly disparaging close friends, or "home-gorosi", a kind of irony that can be translated as“praising for killing”: by planting sarcastic content in apparently praiseful words. Throughout this project, we have also introduced successfully the above-mentioned theory in Japan where it is not well-known, which was also an important outcome.
