Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examined the developmental course of acquiring possessive sentences in English and Japanese based on naturalistic data and cross-sectional experimental data.We have proposed the following hypotheses concerning the meaning of possession: in the course of English language development, the meaning of the “have” possessive sentence extends from the relation of the possessor's proximity to that of typical possession; in the case of Japanese, the meaning of an aru “be” possessive sentence extends the relation of the whole and a part to that of the possessor and the possessee. The meaning of a motteru “have” possessive sentence expresses first carrying and then possessing, whose meaning is derived from the former meaning. We have argued that the acquisition of concept possession, a one-to-one mapping of form and meaning and dynamic or developmental principles sensitive to the present grammar can underlie the acquisition of possessive sentences in Japanese.
