Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, we have clarified how the characteristics of Japanese noun modifying clause affect acquisition of English relative clauses or appositive clauses by Japanese learners. Japanese language does not distinguish relative clauses and appositive clauses either morphologically or syntactically. We have pointed out that this causes difficulty for Japanese learners to acquire distinction between types of relative clauses or between relative clauses and appositive clauses by showing how often they actually make mistakes in these respects. Furthermore, it has also become clear that Japanese learners make mistakes on these points more often than Korean and Chinere learners, whose languages does not have strict distinction between relatives and appositives but have some features characterizing types of noun-modifying clauses.
