Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project aims to assess the effect of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank on countries’ policy reforms by examining financial reforms and the impact of US loans. As a part of the project, I assessed the effects of the U.S. and Japan on the likelihood of IMF loan program approvals to examine the degree to which the IMF has changed since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). The results demonstrate that U.S. interests significantly increased the likelihood of IMF program approvals before the GFC. However, since the GFC, the U.S.’s influence on IMF programs has been noticeably diminished. In addition, Japan’s independent significant influence on IMF programs has only been observed in the Asian region―not on a global scale―during the pre-GFC period.
