Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis. Recently, Bordetella holmesii has being mentioned as the third causative agent of pertussis. Epidemiological studies clearly suggested importance of control of B. holmesii infection in humans. In this study, we developed effective vaccines against B. holmesii infection in a mouse model. Also, we determined a protective antigen of B. holmesii. Our results will help development of modified pertussis vaccines that are effective to all causative agents of pertussis.
