Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Infection with new influenza viruses, for example avian H5N1 virus, is known to have a high mortality rate. The main cause of death among these patients is acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)/diffuse alveolar damage (DAD). However, no effective treatment for ARDS/DAD has been established. We previously reported that i) mouse-adapted influenza virus infection induced ARDS/DAD in the mouse lungs, ii) administration of artificial surfactant had a beneficial effect on mice infected with influenza virus. In this study, we tried to reveal the mechanism of beneficial effect of the artificial surfactant to influenza virus-infected mice. In addition, the effect of the new type of artificial surfactant was examined.
