Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research aims at (1) the spread of Forensic Linguistics in Japanese society and (2) its application to ESL education. Fruit of (1): As for the vague criteria "indication of fact (which lowers someone's reputation)" required in judging a case as defamation, we made a linguistic analysis focusing on verbal expressions appeared in defamation cases. In almost all cases we observe, the presence of verbal expressions which denote a particular type of event can be observed. Such expressions represent a certain type of event in which the victim of defamation is interpreted as an intentional subject of the action that the verb denotes, and the action badly influences someone. Fruit of (2): We introduced materials of Forensic Linguistics to an ESL class and found out that this method is very effective to foster students' analytical thinking and strengthen their command of English.
