Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study firstly revealed that picture books are used primarily for relieving the stress of young and infant patients as well as for other various reasons, by surveying how picture books are used in hospitals. The study secondly distributed a questionnaire and asked 41 Japanese children and 72 female university students to rate their changes in their feelings after reading a picture book. Its result showed that both the children and the students recognized their stress was reduced by reading the book, and that they were apt to increase their anxiety after reading a picture book dealt with death or sickness. The study thirdly delivered a picture book dealing with no contents of death or sickness to 52 hospitalized infant and young patients, and asked them to rate their changes in their feelings after reading the book. Its result showed that reading a picture book not dealing with death or sickness reduced their stress of infant and young patients.
