Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research explains the significance of Yuletide poetry in early modern England and how it was imbued with political implications, eulogizing the House of Stuart, especially the birth of Charles II, and functioning as a theme to support the kingship through the period. Cavalier poets, including minor ones, identified the birth of Charles II with the coming of Christ. This continued throughout the Civil War, the Interregnum, and even the Restoration. The study also suggests Cavalier poets described Christ, identified with King Charles I, as a defender of popular festivals including Christmas in order to vindicate the kingship.
