This study aimed to understand the development and changes of a second language (L2) willingness to communicate (WTC) among Japanese learners of English from an ecological systems theory's perspective. For this objective, I collected both quantitative and qualitative data from Japanese university students. From the interpretations of the results, this study clarified the students' situational contexts in which their willingness to use English was promoted and the ecological conditions that led to the development of their future self-image as an English user.
