For the purpose of developing the English vocabulary list particularly designed for oral communication, an English speech corpus, which contains more than seven million words, has been developed based on scripts of English movies and TV dramas.
A comparative analysis between vocabulary items that commonly appear in officially approved Japanese junior high and high school English textbooks and a vocabulary list derived from the English speech corpus successfully captured some features of a group of words that most frequently appear in natural oral communication in English.
