Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research examined whether collective punishment can enhance cooperation and peer-punishment within groups under certain conditions to propose a solution for free-riding problem (i.e., social dilemma). To examine the conditions that collective punishment (i.e., a form of punishment whereby a norm violator’s group members) would work effectively, three studies were conducted. Study 1 show that remembering the event of collective punishment enhances group identity and in-group cooperative norm. Study 2 presented that collective punishment works effectively when the cooperative norm is addressed explicitly. Study 3 revealed that collective punishment increased cooperation and peer-punishment when the group members control other’s behavior each other.
