We investigated the effect and meaning of oral care in patients with cardiovascular disease receiving cardiac surgery.
A total of 192 patients underwent perioperative oral management and none of them developed IE after surgery. The results suggest the effect of perioperative oral management on prevention of IE.
In 42 ventilated patients after heart surgery in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the status of dental plaque, tongue coating and bacterial count were examined. Oral bacteria remarkably decreased for about 6 hours when topical tetracycline was applied, although topical povidone iodine exhibited no apparent effects. These results indicate that irrigation of the oral cavity and oropharynx followed by topical antibiotic administration may reduce oral bacteria in mechanically ventilated patients.
