Outline of Final Research Achievements |
An invariant object on the laminar-turbulent boundary in phase space is call the "edge state". Three edge states are obtained for the pressure-driven flow through a square straight duct, varying the streamwise period of the calculation. For a short duct, the edge state is found to be a travelling wave spanning the whole calculation domain. Expanding the streamwise period moderately, the edge state shows a chaotic behavior where the localization of the disturbances are occasionally observed. For a long duct, the edge trajectory settles down to a travelling wave solution with streamwise localized disturbances whose amplitude is very small. The localized solution with small amplitude is of importance in that it is capable of triggering the transition to turbulence.
