Outline of Research at the Start

Focusing on malaria in Japanese military-occupied Indonesia (1942-1945), this socio-medical history study explores social life through medical care, hygiene, epidemic prevention, hygiene, medical technology, public awareness activities, social practices, and resulting lifestyle changes in the 3 military-administered regions under the 16th Army, the 25th Army and the Navy. As combatting diseases that cross administrative borders requires cooperation, this cross-regional study will yield a comprehensive picture of local conditions and wartime society, linking individual lives with public policy.
