Outline of Research at the Start	トウダイグサ科樹木Macaranga winkleriはシリアゲアリの1種に営巣空間(幹や枝内の空洞)と食物(花外蜜と栄養体)を与え、植物体表面に常にアリを徘徊させることによって被食防衛効果を得ている。このアリ種はきわめて攻撃性が高いため、M. winkleriを常食する植食性昆虫はほとんどいない。しかし一部の個体では、アリが植物体上にいるにもかかわらずナナフシに寄主利用されており、アリの攻撃性低下が予想される。本研究はM. winkleriにおけるアリとの相利共生関係の種内変異を探査し、安定して見える相利系であっても相手への依存度や提供する利益の量・質を低下させる場合があることを示す。
