Outline of Research at the Start

We can learn about a physical system either by passively observing it, or by actively perturbing it and observing its response. While in thermal equilibrium, these observations are closeley related, for non-equilibrium systems, such a direct relation does not exist. In this research project, we aim to uncover new relations between passive and active measurements in non-equilibrium systems in the form of inequalities. We will investigate how such relations extend to the quantum regime and demonstrate how response of non-equilibrium systems can be used for designing enhanced sensors.
