本研究は、総力戦体制期から占領体制期における民間精神療法の動向とそのイデオロギー的機能を、仏教や神道との交錯に焦点を当てて明らかにするものである。従来の研究では、民間精神療法は総力戦体制期に衰退したと考えられてきたが、むしろ当該期に一般化して公的領域へと浸透し、一種のイデオロギー的機能をも果たしていた。この具体的内容を明らかにするために、総力戦体制期の仏教復興と国体明徴運動を通じて民間精神療法・仏教・神道がいかに交錯して相互変容したのか、その交錯によって生じたイデオロギー的機能とは何だったのか、さらに戦後の占領体制期においてこの交錯がどう持続・転化したのかを探究する。
