Outline of Research at the Start

現代の大衆文化としての「身体改造 (Body modification)」は、20世紀末に欧米から世界に波及し、21世紀を約四半世紀経た近年に再び隆盛している。
身体改造は、社会的な因習から身体が解放された時代に、あえて規律的で身体への侵襲性が高い行為をし、身体感覚を取り戻し精神の鋭敏化と安定を調和させる目的に端を発する。肝要な点は、一方では古代から前近代の伝統や儀式の中に、他方では未来のサイボーグに、身体の理想を求めた点である。本研究は、この正反対の身体のあり方をめぐる実践の文化と感性の諸相を捉え、19世紀から21世紀の身体改造文化をめぐる証言から詳らかになる「身体の再発見」を提示する。
