Outline of Research at the Start	近代日本美術史研究は、近年グローバルな視点からの再検討が進み、日本という枠組みの中だけではもはや論じきれないとの認識が高まっている。明治期に来日し美術教育に関わった外国人美術家の研究は戦前から存在し、近年その研究の精度も格段に深まりつつある。しかしながら、工部美術学校の絵画教師アントーニオ・フォンタネージについての研究は、日本では同校における影響関係に特化した40年前の研究で止まっていると言っても過言ではない。本研究は、19世紀イタリアの美術界、美術思想、美術教育の文脈に置き直して「風景画家」フォンタネージを再検討し、グローバルな視点で近代日本美術史を再解釈するための視座を獲得する。
