研究発展のステージ間（成長期、結実期など）の相違に着目し、次のステージへ移行したトピックスと移行できなかったトピックの原因を究明し、“選択型”の大型研究費の利点・欠点を明らかにする。　方法的には、1990年代以降の歴史的変遷に着目し、科学計量学（論文、研究費、特許など）と言説分析（会議録など）を駆使する。
