Outline of Research at the Start	明治から昭和初期に活躍した森盲天外は33歳で両目を失明するも、その後も地方政治家として功績を残し、多くの著作を残した。本研究は、彼を啓蒙思想家・福祉思想家として再評価するとともに、福沢諭吉や中村正直などの明治啓蒙思想家や、中江兆民や植木枝盛といった自由民権運動家たちの思想と比較・検討を行う。また、点字雑誌『むつぼしのひかり』にみられる当時の障害当事者の自己表現と盲天外の思想を対照し、その特徴を浮き彫りにする。この研究を通じて、日本近代における障害者の自己表現と福祉思想の形成過程、そして民主的な人権意識の源流を探る。
