Outline of Research at the Start	本研究の目的は、19世紀米国作家マーク・トウェインの歴史観をより正確に把握することである。通説によると、トウェインは1890年頃まで既存の歴史が事実であることを疑わず、歴史の真実性に対して疑念を抱き始めたのはキャリア後期の1890年代であるとされている。しかし、この見方を裏付ける研究は少なく、存在する研究も1890年頃以前の資料をほとんど考慮していないという欠点を抱えている。本研究は、1890年頃以前のトウェインの歴史に対する見解を含めたより包括的な歴史観の特定を通して彼の歴史観に対する理解の抜本的な刷新を行う。その上で、彼の歴史を主題とするフィクション作品における歴史表象の意味を再検討する。
