Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、英国ラファエル前派に由来するリアリズム文学のアメリカにおける系譜を明らかにする試みである。アメリカ文学史は従来、リアリズム文学を「南北戦争後」という時代区分に位置づけ、そのジャンル的モデルを19世紀中葉以降のフランス文学に見出し、その成立におけるウィリアム・ディーン・ハウエルズの貢献を重視した。これに対して本研究は、「南北戦争以前」の1850年代にボストンの文芸雑誌『アトランティック・マンスリー』が推進したラファエル前派の美学を「客観性」のモデルとするリアリズム文学が、ハウエルズによって主流化するリアリズム文学によって周縁化される過程を捉え、主流文学生成が孕む地政学的様相を検証する。
