Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、メアリー・シェリーの小説『最後の人間』の結末近くに描かれるハイドンのオラトリオ≪天地創造≫の演奏場面を手掛かりに、この作品が人類滅亡を描く終末論的物語なのか、あるいは終末的思想を超克した新世界の到来を告げているのか、解釈の定まらない結末に一つの視点を提起する。ここで演奏される≪天地創造≫はヴィンセント・ノヴェロによる編曲版が意識されていると考えられるが、ノヴェロはシェリーの他、ハント、キーツとも交流し、影響力があった。ハイドンやノヴェロに関する音楽学、並びにシェリーとノヴェロ、ハントらの交友に関する伝記的・実証的研究をシェリー研究に接続し、学際的手法で『最後の人間』の意義を示す。
