Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は19世紀末に慈善活動、娯楽性を伴う訪問、さらには社会主義思想を背景とするセツルメント運動など、中流階級を中心とした人々の関心を集めたスラムを描く小説を分析の中心とする。この空間と住人が、どのようにジャーナリストや小説家によって描かれたのかを明らかにするために、スラムという場が外部の人々の関心を引きながらも、都市のアイデンティティ形成において周縁化され、またその場の中心であるべき人々の感情や経験が代弁されてしまう様相を検証する。その際に戦略的な沈黙の可能性をも視野に入れて、スラムという場所とその住人をめぐる活字文化から、世紀末の人々の政治的な欲望と抵抗の痕跡を探っていく。
