Outline of Research at the Start	Thomas Paineはアメリカを「万人のためのアサイラム」と呼んだが、19世紀は奴隷制、西漸運動におけるインディアン放逐など、アサイラムたるアメリカから排除される人々が多く生まれた世紀である。アサイラムとなるべきアメリカから排除された彼らは、さらなるアサイラムを探さざるをえず、アメリカの周縁へと移動を余儀なくされる。本研究は、19世紀アメリカ文学がアサイラムを求める人々を繰り返し描くことにより、現実において喪失されたアサイラムを文学作品のなかに創出し、国家の理想を文学という虚構のレベルで補完しつつも批判していることを明らかにする。
