Outline of Research at the Start	20世紀前半のアメリカで活躍した作家ジョン・ドス・パソスは、1920-1930年代に発表した一連の小説において実験的な語りの技法を駆使し、新しい創作の地平を切り拓いた。詩や旅行記など多彩なジャンルの作品を世に送り出したドス・パソスだが、その革新性が際立つのは小説群である。代表作『U・S・A』(1938)は、客観的で抒情を排したハードボイルドな「男らしさ」を強化する面を有する。しかしこの作品は同時に、語り手の私的かつ詩的な内面も伝える。本研究では、ドス・パソスの初期作品から『U・S・A』を中心に、それぞれのテクストにおける主題と技法とジェンダーの関わりに着目し、語りの様式と男性性との問題を検討する。
