Outline of Research at the Start

かつてフランス語はヨーロッパの公用語であり、東欧やロシアの知識人たちはこの言語を用いて、日常的に会話、思考、執筆を行なっていた。だが同時にフランス革命前後のヨーロッパの政治的混乱は、彼らの自己同一性を強く揺すぶることになる。例えばポーランドは三度の領土分割を経て、地図上から姿を消し、またナポレオン率いるフランス軍はロシアと戦火を交える。こうした動乱の中で、ポーランドやロシアの知識人はどこに自らの拠り所を求めたのか。言語、国籍、民族、宗教、習慣などが複雑に絡み合う形で、彼らの自己同一性は形成されていたはずである。その有り様を、主にヤン・ポトツキ（1761-1815）という人物の残した著作に探る。
