手話言語において，指さしは一見ジェスチャーに使われるものと同じ役割を持っているように見える。しかしよく観察すると，指さしにはジェスチャー的性質を示さないものがある。
本研究代表者・分担者らは今までに，日本手話の文末に現れる「文末指さし」が，主語一致や話題一致など，音声言語とも共通するような統語的役割を持つ要素であると見なせる根拠を見出してきた。
本研究ではそのような「文末指さし」の分析に基づき，従来検討されてこなかった例文にも検討を広げ，さらに進んで名詞句内に現われる「指さし」をも観察することで，「指さし」が文や名詞句の構造において統語的一致に関する機能を果たしているという仮説の検討を深めていく。
