「語りのwhen節」とは、"I was watching the TV when someone knocked on the door" のような文に見られるwhen節である。この場合の "when" は、「～するとき」と訳される通常のwhen節とは異なり、 "and then" で言い換えることができる。また、語りのwhen節は、先行節よりも際立ち度が高いという特徴を有している。本研究は、この表現形式の通時的発達を、特に先行節の動詞部に現れるアスペクト形式との関連から、実証的に解明することを目的としている。
