Outline of Research at the Start

This research project examines the grammatical competence of Japanese university English language learners as displayed through their accomplishment of interactional actions in real time during task-based language learning small-group discussion activities. Applying principles and concepts of Interactional Linguistics and Conversation Analysis, we analyze the interaction produced among students and the co-construction of grammar as it emerges in interaction. The research project will reveal learner grammatical competence shown in deployment of linguistic forms.
