Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は明治期の外国人叙勲について分析する。この時期の外国人叙勲者の数は7500名前後で、その国籍は45カ国に及ぶ。近代日本政治外交史研究では、アメリカ、イギリス、中国（清）、朝鮮（韓国）との関係を重視する傾向にあるが、明治政府は勲章制度を一つの手段として、それ以外の国とも幅広く交流していたのである。本研究では、国立公文書館の所蔵文書などを使用しながら、外国人叙勲者の国籍別・叙勲理由別・申請省庁別のデータだけでなく、彼らの経歴や叙勲・陞叙回数といった個人的な情報の収集・分析も行っていく。本研究はこれらの分析を通じて、近代日本の国際関係史を多彩な広がりを持つものとして再構築していきたい。
