Outline of Research at the Start

1970年代の「鎖国」の見直しにより新たな日本近世像が描かれたのに対し、日本開国史研究はその成果を充分に吸収することなく、西洋中心主義史観にもとづく研究が今日まで進められている。キリスト教の排斥、通商国及び通信国の限定という「鎖国」の要件に注目し、欧米からの通商要求に対し、当時の対外関係をどのように変更しようとしたのかという視点に立つ研究はない。そこで、「開国論」として読まれてきた海防論を含む対外関係意見書を主たる分析対象とし、当時の人びとの対外関係にかかわる認識を考察することで、既成概念の再考を迫り、開国史研究のみならず国内外の19世紀国際関係史研究及び19世紀地域史研究へ刺激を与える。
