Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、仲裁裁判条約の観点からの20世紀初頭の日米関係史研究である。ハーグ万国平和会議において、国際社会は初めて仲裁裁判制度の導入を実施した。これと並行し、日米二国間でも協調関係を維持する手段の一つとして、仲裁裁判条約が締結され、その後も期限を迎える度に延長された。この日米仲裁裁判条約は、日露戦争後の険悪化する両国間関係を調整する手段の一つとして結ばれたという側面があり、また1930年代に入り日米関係がさらに悪化する中で、仲裁裁判条約によって協調を再建しようとする議論も存在するようになった。こうした仲裁裁判条約の意義を問い直すことで、従来とは異なる近代日米関係史の視座を提供する。
