Outline of Research at the Start	本研究課題は、19世紀から20世紀初頭にかけての英領ビルマ（今日のミャンマー）を舞台として、同地の住民と植民地国家との関係を考察する。具体的には、ミャンマーの公文書館における資料調査により、住民が植民地当局あてに作成、提出した請願書を入手、分析する。請願は、請願者の主張や要望を当局に訴え、それにたいして当局が回答するプロセスをともなう。この点に着目して本研究課題では、請願（書）を媒介とする、地域住民と植民地国家との関係性にせまることにより、植民地支配にたいし、現地の人びとがどのように対応したのかという問いにひとつの答えを導こうとする。
