Outline of Research at the Start	アゼルバイジャン人の民族意識の形成にあたっては、イランとの連続性によってロシア帝国内の他のテュルク系民族との違いが自覚され、一方でイランとの断絶性によってイラン人（ペルシア人）とは異なる自分たちを発見する、という相反するふたつの過程が同時に進行したと考えられる。本研究は、「ムスリム聖職者」と呼ばれた社会階層に着目することで、この過程の実態を解明しようと試みるものである。そのための主な史料は、現地語で書かれた各種の文書、写本、新聞記事などとなる。本研究の成果は、「民族」「国境」「オリエンタリズム」「帝国」といった、より大きな問題に接続する視座をも提供する。
