本研究は、日本初の仏教・キリスト教間の本格的な宗教論争と言われる「山口の宗論」（1551年）に注目し、この宗論に関する言説や描写が近世中欧で広まった経緯および諸要因を解明することである。その際、宗論の言説や描写が、同地域の宗派間の諍いやイエズス会など聖職者の動向、スペイン系・オーストリア系ハプスブルク家の政治的宗教的関心にどのように左右されたのかに注目する。
