Outline of Research at the Start

中世初期イングランドの農民をめぐっては、荘園制の起源を軸とした長い議論がある。しかしそこでは、農民はやがて領主制に回収される過渡的なもの、あるいはゲルマン的な原始的状態と見做され、彼らの経済と秩序そして政治的世界との繋がりを、それ独自のものとして説得的に描写した研究はなかったように思う。この限界を乗り越えるために注目すべきなのが、モラル・エコノミー論である。本研究では、自由身分の農民たちによる互酬性の原理とその機能を可能な限り具体的に浮かび上がらせ、中世初期に特有の農民世界を追究する。この、領主による経済的搾取や支配とは異なる言葉で語られる農村史は、中世史の新たな地平を拓く契機となるはずだ。
