Outline of Research at the Start

メキシコで人々が災厄に遭遇し、奇跡的にそこから救われたさいに、神への感謝を込めてカトリック教会に奉納する絵はエクスボト（ex-voto）と呼ばれる。本研究では、教会に奉納されたエクスボトと現代アートとして制作されたそれのうち、とくに自然災害に関するものに着目する。そして、自然災害を奇跡との関連で理解しようとするメキシコ人の心性のメカニズムを解明しようと試みる。そのさい本研究は、奇跡を「困難を解決し、そこから回復していくための民衆知」と捉えることで、エクスボトが自然災害に翻弄される姿を描いた図像ではなく、むしろ主体的な取り組みの表象として考察する。
