Outline of Research at the Start	1960年代はアメリカ研究者が日本で社会的に大きな役割を果たしえた最後の時代であるにもかかわらず、一次史料に基づく彼らの実証的な研究は皆無に近い。そこで、その文化的側面に多大な影響を与えた第1世代のアメリカ研究者の役割に焦点を当て、1960年代の日米関係を考察する。60年代後半に入り、対米知的交流における新世代が台頭するが、そこに至るまでの彼らの活動に着目することには、米中対立の狭間で混迷を深める今日の日本外交にも大きな示唆がある。
