Outline of Research at the Start

16世紀後半以降、日本列島の各地で「鯨組」と呼ばれる大規模な捕鯨集団が形成された。なかでも平戸藩生月島に拠点を置く益冨組は、18世紀中葉以降、北部九州の海域を中心に複数の鯨組を同時に操業するなど、近世日本最大の鯨組と評価されてきた。
本研究は、近年、史料の一般公開が開始した益冨組の豊富な捕鯨史料の調査・分析を通じて、いかにして益冨組のような巨大な経営組織が形成されていたのかを明らかにする。また、この益冨組の分析を土台にして、巨大な経営組織を生み出した西海捕鯨業の構造的な特質を解明するとともに、他の捕鯨地域との比較分析などを通じて、日本の在来捕鯨業の全体像を新たに再構築することを企図する。
