Outline of Research at the Start

1992年度ピーク時に205万人であった18歳人口は、2023年度に112万人に減少する一方、大学の総定員が漸増した結果、2024年度は私立大学の59.2％が定員割れとなった。そこで本研究は1987-2024年度を対象期とし、こうした現象が「なぜ・どのように生じたのか」を全体の問いとする。そのうえで高等教育政策、大学総定員に関するマクロ・データ、私立大学個々の経営データやインタビュー等を通じて、①総定員増加をもたらした政府と大学との相互作用の過程、②学生獲得をめぐる市場競争構造、③過去の定員拡張が今日の経営状況の維持・改善に寄与している大学セグメント、を明らかにする。
