Outline of Research at the Start

Citizenship is a public concept, but the public-private relationship is not dichotomous but dynamic. How the public-private distinction is perceived and interpreted has consequences for citizenship awareness, understanding and action. This project critically appraises the intellectual debates and empirically investigates the discursive construction of the public- private distinction in citizenship education to explore educational implications for promoting public awareness and action for liberty, equality and democracy in contemporary China.
