MMPIの最新版であるMMPI-3日本版は，いくつもの点で大きな変更があったが，日本のMMPIの利用者に実践上で困惑をもたらした変化の一つに適用年齢が18歳以上になったことが。
MMPI-3日本版の適用年齢の変化は，青年期を扱う精神疾患の臨床現場だけではなく，家庭裁判所が扱う犯罪少年，触法少年，虞犯少年への適用や鑑別所での使用を困難にしてしまった。公認心理師の職域に司法や福祉があることから，司法の現場や教育関連の相談機関などでの利用可能な青年期版が必要といえるので，MMPI-A-3の日本版を開発する。
