Outline of Research at the Start	世界各地の海底から採取された微化石標本の国際的な標準標本群であるMRCコレクションを用いて、過去3500万年間の円盤型珪藻の細胞サイズを測定し、その変化を明らかにする。この期間の地球環境を大まかに述べれば、南極氷床が発達するのにともなって寒冷化が進行した。一方で、一時的に温暖になった時代も知られている。このような環境変化に対して、植物プランクトンである珪藻の細胞サイズが減少したという仮説が提唱されており、この仮説を本研究で測定された実証的なデータで検証する。
