Outline of Research at the Start

Altermagnets are a recently recognized kind of magnets that provide spin split bands like ferromagnets but at zero total magnetization. They are promising candidates for generation of spin currents and other applications, but they avoid disadvantages of materials with strong spin orbit coupling that require rare elements. There is an intense world-wide hunt for technologically useful altermagnetic materials, and the central aim of this project is to put the considerable relevant research skills of our research group behind a dedicated effort to identify and establish excellent altermagnets.
